How Long Does a Campervan Stove Stay Warm?

One thing many people notice after installing a stove in their campervan is how long the warmth lasts, even after the fire has died down.

A stove doesn’t just heat the air inside the van while it’s burning. The body of the stove absorbs heat and slowly releases it back into the space, which helps keep the van warm for some time afterwards.

Heat builds while the stove is burning

When the fire is established, the stove gradually heats up as the steel absorbs the energy from the fire.

As the stove warms up it begins radiating heat into the surrounding space, which is why the van often becomes comfortable quite quickly once the stove is running properly.

Stove construction makes a difference

The way a stove is built also affects how well it holds heat.

Our Little Burners stoves are made from 4mm thick mild steel, which is excellent at absorbing and retaining heat. Once the stove body is hot, the steel continues releasing warmth into the van even after the fire has slowed down.

Dotty, for example, has double-layered walls, which helps retain heat even longer and allows the stove to stay warm for extended periods.

Heat continues after the fire slows

Even after the fuel has burned down, the stove will usually stay warm for quite a while.

Because the stove body stores heat, it slowly releases that warmth back into the van as it cools. This means the van stays comfortable for longer rather than losing heat immediately when the fire fades.

Fuel choice makes a difference

The type of fuel you burn can also affect how long the stove continues producing heat.

Slow-burning fuels such as smokeless coal briquettes tend to produce a steady heat for longer periods. Many van owners use briquettes when they want the stove to burn for extended periods or overnight.

Insulation helps retain heat

How well your campervan is insulated also plays a big role in how long the warmth lasts.

A well insulated van keeps heat inside much more effectively, allowing the warmth from the stove to remain in the space for longer.

Smaller spaces stay warm longer

Because campervans are compact spaces, they warm up quickly and hold onto heat surprisingly well.

Once the stove has been running for a while, the entire interior of the van becomes warm — including furniture, walls and bedding — which helps the warmth last even longer.

A steady, comfortable warmth

Rather than producing intense bursts of heat, a campervan stove tends to create a steady warmth that gradually spreads through the van.

This gentle, consistent heat is one of the reasons so many people enjoy having a stove in their campervan.
