Where Is the Best Place to Install a Stove in a Campervan?

A good position will help the stove heat the van evenly, make the flue easier to install and ensure there is enough space around the stove for safe clearances.

Taking a little time to plan the location properly can make the whole installation process much easier.

Keep the flue route simple

One of the most important things to think about is the route the flue pipe will take through the roof.

Ideally the flue should run straight upwards from the stove and pass directly through the roof. A straight flue creates better airflow and helps the stove burn more efficiently.

If the stove is placed in a position where the flue needs to bend around cupboards or roof beams, the installation can become more complicated.

Allow enough space around the stove

Stoves produce a lot of radiant heat, so it’s important to allow enough space around them.

Leaving the correct distance between the stove and surrounding materials helps keep the installation safe and allows heat to disperse properly.

Many campervan installations include a heat shield behind the stove, which can help reduce the required clearance distance and make positioning easier in smaller spaces.

Think about heat distribution

Because campervans are relatively small spaces, a stove will usually warm the whole van quite quickly.

Positioning the stove somewhere central or where heat can circulate easily helps distribute warmth throughout the space.

Many van builders install the stove near the sliding door or towards the front of the living area so heat can move through the van naturally.

Consider the surrounding layout

It’s also worth thinking about how the stove will fit with the rest of the van layout.

Make sure the stove won’t block walkways, cupboards or seating areas. You should also allow enough room to safely open the stove door and add fuel.

Plan before fixing anything in place

Before permanently fixing the stove or cutting the roof hole, it’s a good idea to place the stove in position and visualise the full flue system.

Checking the flue route, clearances and roof position before making any cuts can save time and avoid unnecessary adjustments later.

Every van build is different

Every campervan layout is slightly different, so the best location will depend on the size of the van and how the interior is designed.

With a little planning, it’s usually possible to find a position that works well for both heating and installation.
