Do Campervan Stoves Smell?

One question people sometimes ask when considering a stove for their campervan is whether it will make the van smell.

When installed and used correctly, a stove should not produce noticeable smoke smells inside the van. The flue system carries smoke and gases safely outside, while the fire burns cleanly inside the stove.

However, there are a few situations where smells can occur, especially when the stove is first installed or if the fire isn’t burning properly.

The first few burns

When a stove is brand new, the first few fires can sometimes produce a slight smell.

This is completely normal and usually comes from the paint or protective coatings curing as the stove heats up for the first time. After a few uses this smell normally disappears and the stove begins to run as expected.

Burning clean fuel

The type of fuel you use can also affect how clean the stove burns.

Dry fuel burns hotter and cleaner, producing less smoke and fewer residues inside the stove and flue. Poor quality fuel, especially damp wood, can create more smoke and may produce unwanted smells.

Good airflow helps

Stoves rely on good airflow to burn efficiently.

When the stove receives enough air, the fuel burns hotter and cleaner. This helps the smoke travel smoothly up the flue rather than lingering around the stove.

Opening the air controls when lighting the stove and allowing the fire to establish properly will usually prevent smoky starts.

A well installed flue

A correctly installed flue system helps smoke leave the van quickly.

A straight flue with good height creates strong chimney draw, which encourages smoke and gases to rise naturally up the pipe and out of the van.

Occasional smells when lighting

Sometimes a small amount of smoke can escape briefly when lighting the stove or when the door is opened to add fuel.

This is usually very temporary and disappears quickly once the stove is burning strongly.

A warm and comfortable space

Once the stove is running well, most van owners find that their campervan simply feels warm and comfortable rather than smoky.

The steady heat and glow of the stove is one of the things many people love most about having one in their van.
