How to Light a Campervan Stove Properly

Lighting a campervan stove is usually very straightforward, but starting the fire properly can make a big difference to how well the stove performs.

A good fire setup helps the stove heat up quickly, creates strong airflow through the flue and produces a steady bed of heat that will keep the stove running smoothly.

With a little practice, lighting the stove soon becomes second nature.

Start with a clean stove

Before lighting the fire, it’s always a good idea to make sure the stove is clear of excess ash from previous fires.

A small layer of ash is perfectly normal and can actually help insulate the firebed slightly, but removing large amounts of ash helps maintain good airflow through the stove.

Our favourite method

One method we often use ourselves, especially with our Dotty stove, is a simple layered approach.

Start with a layer of coal briquettes on the bottom of the stove. On top of this, place a firelighter, followed by a small handful of kindling. Finally, place a small log on top.

Once the firelighter is lit, the flames quickly catch the kindling and begin heating the fuel below. This method helps the stove warm up steadily and creates a strong base fire.

Give the fire plenty of air

When lighting the stove, it’s important to allow plenty of airflow.

Opening the air controls allows oxygen to reach the fire, helping it establish more quickly. As the fire grows stronger and the stove warms up, the airflow can be adjusted to control how quickly the fuel burns.

Let the fire establish

After lighting the stove, give the fire a few minutes to establish itself.

Once the kindling has caught and the fire is producing good heat, additional fuel can be added if needed. Allowing the fire to build gradually helps create a strong bed of embers that will keep the stove burning steadily.

Every stove takes a little practice

Each stove and setup behaves slightly differently depending on the fuel being used, the outside temperature and the airflow settings.

After a few uses you’ll quickly get a feel for how your stove responds and how to get the best fire started.

Enjoy the warmth

Once the fire is burning properly, a campervan stove can quickly fill the space with warmth.

The steady heat and glow of the fire is one of the reasons so many van owners love having a stove in their build.
