How High Should a Campervan Stove Flue Be?

When installing a stove in a campervan, one question that often comes up is how high the flue pipe should extend above the roof.

Flue height affects how well the stove draws air and how efficiently smoke travels up the chimney. Getting the height right helps the stove burn smoothly while also keeping the installation practical for a vehicle.

Minimum height for twin wall pipe

For most campervan installations using twin wall insulated pipe, the minimum external height is around 340mm above the roof.

This provides the smallest amount of height needed for the flue to perform properly while keeping the chimney as compact as possible.

Keeping the external section lower also helps avoid adding unnecessary height to the vehicle, which can be useful when travelling under barriers, trees or height restrictions.

Single wall pipe through the roof

In some installations, the single wall pipe can pass through the roof before transitioning to twin wall pipe.

In these cases, the single wall section can sit as low as around 120mm above the roof before connecting to the twin wall system.

This allows flexibility when planning the layout of the flue while still maintaining safe clearances and good airflow.

Keeping the flue straight

Regardless of height, keeping the flue pipe as straight and vertical as possible will always improve stove performance.

A straight flue allows smoke and hot gases to rise naturally, which strengthens the chimney draw and helps the stove burn more efficiently.

Using a rain cap

Most campervan flue systems are finished with a rain cap at the top of the chimney.

This helps prevent rain entering the flue while still allowing smoke to escape freely. It also helps keep debris from entering the pipe when the stove isn’t in use.

Optional tee cap for the flue

Another option some people choose is a tee cap for the twin wall flue pipe.

This allows the rain cap to be removed and the flue opening capped when the stove is not being used for long periods, such as during the warmer months.

If you do cap the flue, just remember to remove the cap before lighting the stove again.

Planning your flue height

Every campervan layout is slightly different, so the final flue height will depend on the stove position and roof layout.

The aim is always to create a safe, straight flue system that allows smoke to leave the van easily while keeping the external chimney height practical for travelling.

Extra height?

Whilst you are parked up if you wanted to extend your flue pipe you can! We sell additional sections so it can be placed on top!
