Do Campervan Stoves Need Ventilation?

When installing a stove in a campervan, one question that often comes up is whether ventilation is needed.

The simple answer is yes. Like any fuel-burning appliance, a stove needs a supply of fresh air to burn properly and safely. Good airflow helps the stove run efficiently and keeps the environment inside the van comfortable.

Why airflow is important

A stove works by burning fuel and drawing air into the fire. This air supports combustion and allows the fire to burn steadily.

At the same time, the flue carries smoke and gases safely out of the van. For this process to work well there needs to be a balance between fresh air entering the space and smoke leaving through the chimney.

Without enough airflow, the stove may struggle to burn properly and the fire may become difficult to control.

Most vans already have ventilation

Many campervans already include ventilation as part of the conversion.

Roof vents, floor vents and small air gaps around doors and windows often provide enough airflow for everyday use. These openings allow fresh air to enter while helping warm air and moisture escape.

Even small amounts of airflow can make a big difference to how comfortably the stove runs.

We recommend a 100mm vent near your stove to allow enough air ventilation!

Ventilation also helps reduce condensation

Campervans naturally build up moisture from breathing, cooking and wet clothing.

Ventilation helps reduce condensation by allowing damp air to escape and fresh air to circulate through the van.

This is especially useful during colder weather when stoves are used more frequently.

Keep some airflow while the stove is burning

When running a stove it’s always a good idea to allow a little airflow inside the van.

This could be as simple as leaving a roof vent slightly open or allowing a small amount of fresh air to enter the space.

This steady airflow supports combustion and helps maintain a comfortable environment.

Safe stove use

Alongside ventilation, a carbon monoxide alarm is always recommended in any campervan with a stove or fuel-burning appliance.

These small alarms provide an extra layer of safety and give peace of mind when using heating inside a van.
