How Much Fuel Does a Campervan Stove Use?

One of the questions many people ask when planning a campervan stove installation is how much fuel they will actually use.

The answer can vary depending on a few different factors, including the size of the stove, the fuel being used, the outside temperature and how well insulated the van is.

The good news is that small stoves are surprisingly efficient, and many van owners find they use far less fuel than expected.

Small space means less fuel

Campervans are relatively small spaces compared to houses, which means it doesn’t take a large fire to warm the interior.

Once the stove is running and the van has warmed up, maintaining a comfortable temperature usually requires only a small amount of fuel at a time.

Fuel type makes a difference

Different fuels burn at different speeds.

Logs can burn quite quickly and may need to be topped up more regularly, while coal briquettes tend to burn more slowly and provide a steady heat for longer periods.

Because of this, many campervan owners prefer briquettes when they want longer burn times and fewer refuels.

How often you will refuel

During colder weather when the stove is running continuously, you may add small amounts of fuel every hour or so to keep the fire going steadily.

However, when the stove is set up with slower burning fuels, the fire can continue producing heat for much longer without needing attention.

Outside temperature and insulation

The outside temperature and how well your van is insulated both play a big role in fuel usage.

A well insulated van holds heat much better, meaning the stove doesn’t need to work as hard to maintain a comfortable temperature.

On colder nights the stove may need slightly more fuel to keep the van warm, while milder evenings may require very little fuel at all.

Learning how your stove behaves

Like most things in van life, a little experience goes a long way.

After using your stove for a short time you will quickly learn how much fuel your setup typically uses and how to maintain a steady burn without using more fuel than necessary.

A little fuel goes a long way

One of the things that surprises many people is how efficient small stoves can be.

With the right setup and fuel, a small amount of fuel can provide warmth for many hours and make a campervan feel comfortable even in cooler conditions.
